MCC in Spain January Rally report
What a difference a year makes! In January 2017, we arrived at our unofficial rally at Villajoyosa in the worst weather the Costa Blanca had seen in 90 years. Luckily there was plenty to do on site, because most of the time, we were either snowed on or rained on.
Fast forward to January 2018, and the sun had his hat well and truly on, for the whole four days of the rally in Calpe. In fact, a couple of brave souls ventured out to sunbathe in swimsuits, although nobody actually entered the pool. It was such beautiful weather that for once we spent more time just relaxing and enjoying the sun outdoors, rather than organising too many activities. When you have temperatures in the high 20s in January, you have to make the most of it!
This was MCC in Spain’s first visit to a newly built site – Camping Sol de Calpe Austral. It’s exclusively for motor homes, and just a few minutes’ walk from the seafront, the market and Calpe town. No need to worry about stocking the van with supplies either, because Lidl is literally across the road from the camp site. There’s a large area of waste ground adjacent to the site, which proved a popular meeting place for the four-legged participants in the rally.
Hosts Liz and Ian Bennett aimed for a mix of relaxation and activity, and the chance to sample some of Calpe’s renowned seafood restaurants while taking in the fabulous views over the Mediterranean. They provided a lovely spread for the Meet and Greet, and that set the tone for the week.
It wasn’t all about the food though – we exercised our brains with a challenging quiz won by the Valentines – Bob and Val, and Sandra and Glenys.
MCC in Spain welcomed a number of ‘virgins’ – first time visitors from the UK, and also Paul and Debbie Johnson, group members attending their first rally. It’s good to see new faces, and everyone enjoyed the experience, although unfortunately one of our visitors had a not so good experience, being taken to hospital with chest pains. In true MCC fashion, everyone rallied around to help, although it did cast a slight shadow over the rally.
Due to the layout of the site, we were all pretty close together, so it all made for a very convivial rally, with lots of opportunities to socialise with friends old and new. It’s what the MCC is all about, and here at MCC in Spain, we do it all with guaranteed sunshine. Hasta pronto, amigos.
All our 2018 rallies run from Monday to Friday, around the middle of the month. Maybe we’ll see you soon.
